Homework Quizzes - A method to expedite checking students’ homework

Here is my method for checking homework without drowning in paperwork or eating up instruction time. This concept was first introduced at the Toronto NCTM conference many years ago but it is well worth re-visiting.

Students are given a homework assignment. Let’s say the homework assignment is “Page 51, all the odd-numbered questions”. Students must write out all steps of each problem to show competency.

When they come into class the next day, they are instructed to use their homework assignment notebook to simply copy and write out the solutions for, let’s say, “Questions 3, 9, and 13” on a blank sheet of paper and turn it in.

This procedure has a calming transition affect when students first come to class and enables the teacher to get a bird’s eye view of the students’ understanding. It may take up to 10 minutes of class time but it is an efficient way of knowing their level of comprehension and root out the students who are struggling so they can receive additional help.

There are several benefits to checking students' homework, including:

Reinforcing learning: Homework assignments are designed to reinforce what students have learned in class. When teachers check homework, they can ensure that students have understood the material and are on track with their learning.

Identifying areas of weakness: Checking homework can help teachers identify areas where students are struggling. By reviewing homework assignments, teachers can see which concepts students are having difficulty with and can provide additional support as needed.

Encouraging responsibility: Checking homework encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. When students know that their work will be checked, they are more likely to complete it and put in the effort to do their best.

Providing feedback: Checking homework provides an opportunity for teachers to provide feedback to students. By giving feedback, teachers can help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and make improvements.

Fostering communication: Checking homework provides an opportunity for teachers and students to communicate about the learning process. Teachers can use homework assignments as a starting point for classroom discussions and can answer any questions that students may have.
