The Thinking Math Classroom

The researcher Peter Liljedahl discusses practices that prioritize and stimulate more hard critical thinking in classrooms. He provides suggestions for incorporating thinking practices at the beginning of class and provides many sample thinking tasks.



Theoretically, this book has a lot of merit. But, practically, with time constraints on completing the curriculum, interruptions, delays, teachers who are over-worked as is, might find these suggestions challenging to incorporate into the curriculum.

Unless… the thinking math classroom could be a course. In the early days of incorporating basic coding into the curriculum, a six-week course was established. This could be the answer to really enhancing critical thinking opportunities. Total immersion into problem solving and critical thinking – a curriculum of its own!
